While Santorum Shoots At Targets, Supporter Says ‘Pretend It’s Obama'

I’d like to tell you about the difference between Barack Obama and Rick Santorum for a moment.  Let’s start with a bit of information about their day today.
This morning, our President addressed the issue of Trayvon Martin’s senseless murder.  With empathy in his voice he not only mentioned that if he had a son, he would look like Trayvon Martin, he also demanded that justice to be served for this young man.  The President urged that “it is absolutely imperative that we investigate every aspect of this and that everybody pulls together, federal, state and local, to figure out how this tragedy happened."
While our president was putting himself in the shoes of Trayvon’s mourning parents, Rick Santorum pandered to the South by displaying his shooting skills at a Louisiana gun range.   As he was preparing to take a shot, a woman in the crowd at the event shouted, “Pretend it's Obama!"  Almost worse than the comment itself, was the fact that the crowd around her chuckled as though this were a joke.  When questioned about this woman’s cry, Santorum, said he didn't hear the comment but he called it "absurd" and added that he was “glad he didn't hear it.”

Now, I know I can’t hold Rick Santorum responsible for that woman’s choice to say something so atrocious.  However, I do hold Rick Santorum accountable for the company he keeps.  I am reminded of a quote from the novel, Lonesome Dove, “You ride with an outlaw, you die with an outlaw” and it seems to me that Rick Santorum is riding with some pretty shabby people.
After his fun at the shooting range Rick Santorum finally addressed Trayvon’s murder.  He said,  "I think that the local and state can do a great job here, you already see the local community is reacting and responding and hopefully this matter will be an example of what law enforcement needs to do in a case like this."
I am pretty disgusted with Rick Santorum today. Considering his tolerance of the woman at the gun range joking about shooting Barrack Obama, and his statement about Trayvon’s murder that seems to suggest that the best course of action would be to maintain the status quo, I would say that it’s pretty clear that Rick Santorum simply won’t stick his neck out for a black guy.
I suspect that on any given day of their lives you could find this kind of juxtaposition between these two men and the company they keep, and I would suggest that when you step into that voting booth this election cycle, you remember that while our nation was grieving the loss of Trayvon Martin, Rick Santorum didn’t pick up a hoodie, he picked up a gun.
